What is Pre-Pointe Training?
Pre-pointe training is a foundational conditioning phase that prepares a dancer's feet, ankles, and core for the unique demands of dancing en pointe. It focuses on building intrinsic foot strength, ankle stability, and proper alignment through targeted exercises—often using resistance bands—to ensure the body can safely support its weight on the tips of the toes.
Pre-pointe training is the essential bridge between dancing in soft ballet slippers and the advanced milestone of dancing en pointe. For adult dancers, this phase is less about a 'test' and more about a dedicated conditioning period designed to protect your joints and ensure your transition to pointe shoes is successful, stable, and sustainable. This training is where you develop the 'fine motor skills' of the feet.
Why Pre-Pointe is Essential for Adults
Unlike younger students whose bones are still forming, adult dancers have fully ossified bones but may face different challenges, such as decreased ankle mobility or old injuries. Pre-pointe training addresses these by building the specific intrinsic foot muscles needed to 'lift' out of the shoe rather than sinking into it. It ensures that your ankles are stable enough to prevent rolling (sickling) and that your legs are strong enough to maintain alignment under pressure. At Broche Ballet, we view pre-pointe as a mandatory safety step for anyone dreaming of their first pair of shoes.
Core Components of the Training
Pre-pointe isn't just about the feet; it involves the entire kinetic chain. We focus on several key pillars:
- Foot Articulation: Learning to move through every part of the foot—heel, arch, ball, and toes. Our 'Classic TheraBand Footwork' videos emphasize the transition through the demi-pointe to improve control.
- Big Toe Strength: The big toe is your primary stabilizer. Exercises found in our 'Pre-pointe Big Toe Focus' sessions help isolate this digit to ensure a strong base.
- Ankle Stability: Preventing 'sickling' (collapsing inward) or 'winging' (collapsing outward) is vital. We utilize speed drills and resistance training to build the ankle strength required for balance.
- Toe Dexterity: Intricate work, such as the exercises in our 'Pre-pointe Exercises for Overlapping Toes' video, helps ensure your toes can spread and grip correctly inside the box of a pointe shoe.
How Broche Ballet Supports Your Journey
We offer one of the most comprehensive digital paths for this transition. Our flagship program, 'Journey to Pointe | First Pointe Shoes for Adults,' features over 637 videos specifically curated to take you from your first day of ballet to your first pair of shoes. This program is designed for the adult schedule, allowing you to build strength incrementally at home.
Once you have built the necessary strength, 'Pointe - Level A' guides you through the logistics: the professional fitting, sewing your ribbons, and your very first movements at the barre. We do not recommend going en pointe without supervision and approval for readiness by a teacher or physical therapist.
Managing Expectations and Timelines
As an adult, your timeline for pre-pointe depends on your consistency, natural foot structure, and previous experience. It is not a race. Some dancers may spend six months in dedicated pre-pointe training, while others may spend years. Using tools like 'Foundations for Jumps and Petite Allegro' can actually accelerate your progress, as the power required for jumps translates directly to the explosive strength needed for relevés en pointe.
Building this foundation is a rewarding process that will improve your 'flat' dancing just as much as your future pointe work. By focusing on these small, intricate movements now, you are ensuring that your first day in pointe shoes is a moment of celebration and confidence.
