About This Video
Welcome to Class 2 of the Broche Ballet Beginner Turning Series. After establishing the fundamentals in our first session, we now shift our focus to one of the most critical components of a successful rotation: the arms. Many dancers struggle with turns because of 'winding up' or letting their arms drift behind their center of gravity. This class is designed to correct those habits by teaching you how to use your arms as a source of strength and stability rather than a hindrance to your balance.
We begin the session with a specialized strength and power warmup. This segment includes targeted calf stretches and foot exercises to ensure your ankles are prepared for the demands of a high relevé. A strong foundation in the feet is essential before we add the complexity of rotation. From there, we move into the mechanics of arm placement. You will learn how the leading arm should travel forward while the trailing arm maintains the shape of the back, avoiding the common mistake of pulling the shoulders out of alignment.
Throughout the lesson, we practice various exercises including quarter turns and half turns. By breaking the movement down into smaller segments, you can focus on the specific 'push' required to come around smoothly. We emphasize the importance of initiating every turn from a deep, controlled plié to generate the necessary upward power. You will also learn how to finish each turn in a clean first position, ensuring that you maintain proper alignment from start to finish. Our instructor provides constant feedback on body positioning, helping you avoid backwards momentum and keeping your hips forward for maximum control. Whether you are just starting your journey with pirouettes or looking to refine your technique, this class provides the technical breakdown necessary to turn with confidence and grace.
