About This Video
Welcome to Class #5 of the Broche Ballet Beginning Turning Series. This session is specifically designed to bridge the gap between simple rotation and the controlled execution of a full pirouette. We focus heavily on the transition from movement to stillness—the landing.
A successful pirouette isn't just about the spin; it's about the preparation and the finish. We begin by revisiting the plié, the engine behind every turn. You will learn how to use a deep, controlled plié to find the power necessary to rise into relevé while maintaining your center.
We then move into the specifics of en dedans (inward) turns. While many beginners find the mechanics of en dedans movements counterintuitive, our step-by-step breakdown ensures you understand the weight transfer and hip alignment required for a clean rotation. One of the biggest hurdles for any dancer is dizziness.
In this class, we break down the art of spotting. Spotting is a vital skill that involves keeping your eyes fixed on a specific point as long as possible while the body rotates, then whipping the head around to find that same spot again. While it might feel disorienting at first, consistent practice helps your vestibular system adapt, eventually reducing dizziness and allowing for multiple rotations.
Finally, we address the landing technique. A beautiful turn can be ruined by a shaky finish. We practice landing in a clean fifth or fourth position, emphasizing the use of the plié to absorb the momentum.
Through a series of quarter and half-turn drills, you will build the muscle memory needed to land your pirouettes with grace and stability. Whether you are a total beginner or a returning dancer looking to polish your technique, this class offers the technical insights needed to turn with confidence and poise.
