About This Video
Transitioning from the barre to the center is one of the most challenging aspects of ballet training. It requires a deep understanding of core engagement, weight placement, and the consistent application of turnout. In this Broche Ballet class, we dive into specific exercises designed to help you maintain your turnout while finding stability in the center of the room.
We begin by finding a solid first position. The key to center balance isn't just standing still; it's about active engagement. You will learn how to feel safe and focused even in challenging positions by utilizing a slight plié to find your center of gravity before lengthening.
One of the biggest hurdles in center work is the tendency to turn in the standing leg when the working leg moves. We focus on keeping the heel forward and under, ensuring that your foundation remains strong during tendu and rond de jambe combinations. As the movements become more complex, such as moving into adagio or arabesque, anchoring becomes vital.
This class emphasizes anchoring the shoulders—specifically the armpits—and maintaining a strong, stable hip. When performing a rond de jambe to the back, we focus on the supporting side to prevent the torso from twisting. This heavy armpit sensation provides the necessary counter-balance for high leg extensions.
Finally, we address the reality of wobbling. We believe wobbling is just your body figuring out the mechanics of balance. We practice holding cou-de-pied and arabesque while allowing the micro-adjustments to happen naturally.
By squeezing the inner thighs together and focusing on your port de bras, you will learn to hold the leg and find stillness in motion. Join us to refine your technique and build the confidence to dance beautifully without the support of the barre.
