About This Video
Step onto the stage from your own home with our advanced "Waltz of the Flowers" choreography series. In this first installment of a three-week intensive at Broche Ballet, we dive into the initial two sections of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved Nutcracker masterpiece. This 31-minute class focuses on the technical precision and lyrical flow required to bring this floral waltz to life.
We begin by breaking down the opening sequences, emphasizing the grace of the petit développé and the crispness of the arm placements. Dancers will work through complex combinations involving arabesque, piqué, and bourrée, ensuring every transition feels fluid and intentional. A major focus of this session is musicality.
The "Waltz of the Flowers" is famous for its sweeping, three-count rhythm, and we spend significant time mastering the timing of movements like the soutenu and sous-sus to ensure they land perfectly on the music. We also explore the importance of the body step pose to create those iconic lines that define this variation. While this class is designed for the advanced dancer, we provide thoughtful modifications.
We understand that home practice spaces vary, so we offer non-jumping options for some of the more expansive movements. This allows you to focus on the upper body artistry and footwork precision without compromising your technique. By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid grasp of the first third of the dance, setting a strong foundation for the pas de chat and sissonne sequences we will introduce in Part 2.
The lesson concludes with a preview of upcoming jumps, including turning jumps, ensuring you are prepared for the full technical breadth of the piece. Master your placement and rhythm today as you prepare for the grand finale of the flowers.
