About This Video
In this 22-minute advanced center session, Broche Ballet invites you to refine the intricate details that transform good technique into exceptional performance. This class specifically targets the mechanics of complex movements, starting with a deep dive into step over turns. One of the most common mistakes in these turns is treating the working leg as a rond de jambe; however, in this tutorial, we focus on treating the entry as a direct closing from dégagé. By moving straight into the working leg without swinging off-center, you maintain a stronger axis and more controlled momentum throughout the rotation.
We also focus heavily on the landing of the step over turn. To ensure a seamless transition into the next movement, we emphasize bending the standing knee—a deep, controlled plié—to absorb the weight and prepare for subsequent choreography. This ability to 'force the issue' with the landing allows for greater fluidity and security in complex center combinations. Pirouettes are approached with a similar mindset; by thinking of the pirouette as a closing from dégagé, dancers can find a cleaner, more efficient path to the retiré position. This mental shift helps eliminate unnecessary tension and promotes a freer, more consistent practice.
Beyond turns, this session includes turning fondu combinations and refined waltz sequences. For the waltz, the focus shifts to 'zippy,' quick balances that maintain a sense of lightness while remaining grounded and musical. Throughout the class, you will receive essential corrections on balance, turnout, and movement quality. We also discuss the importance of breathing and taking small moments to regain composure during a rehearsal or performance setting. Whether you are working on your soutenu, tombé, or a final révérence, this practice is designed to help you execute every step with precision and grace.
