About This Video
Welcome to a special Artistry Day at Broche Ballet. This class is designed to help you move beyond the technical mechanics of the barre and start feeling like a true performer. While technique provides the foundation, artistry is what brings a dancer to life on stage. In this session, we focus on the nuances of port de bras, the depth of a fondu, and the emotional weight of a tombé. Our goal is to bridge the gap between mechanical execution and artistic expression.
The class begins with exercises focused on port de bras and arm movements. We emphasize proper alignment and posture, ensuring that every movement of the arms is supported by the back and integrated with your breath. You will explore how to use your arms not just as appendages, but as expressive extensions of your core. We then transition into tendu and fondu combinations, where we focus on the melting quality that gives these steps their name. By focusing on the musicality of the movement, you will learn to control the speed and resistance of your muscles to match the phrasing of the music.
A major highlight of this class is the adagio section. Here, the instructor guides you through more dramatic and sweeping motions, including arabesque, écarté, and allongé. We discuss how to convey emotion and drama, moving away from being gentle and instead starting with strength and intention. The goal is to bring the audience with you, using your gaze and your presence to fill the room. Whether you are practicing in a studio or at home, this barre will challenge you to think about the why behind every movement. By the end of the session, you will have a better understanding of how to use your upper body and musicality to transform standard exercises into artful expressions.
