About This Video
Welcome to your center practice at Broche Ballet, where we dive deep into the essential mechanics of turning. In this session, we transition from the foundational stability of the barre to the dynamic challenges of center work. Turning is often one of the most intimidating hurdles for beginner dancers, but by breaking down the physics of the movement into manageable components, you can build a solid foundation for elegant pirouettes and beyond.
Our focus today starts with the concept of the vertical axis. Many students struggle with turns because they unintentionally lean too far forward or backward, losing their center of gravity. We will address how to maintain an upright posture and keep your core engaged to stay tall on your supporting leg.
One of the most critical technical elements we cover is the force used during the push-off. Instead of throwing your weight sideways—which often leads to stumbling—you will learn to utilize vertical force from your plié to propel yourself upward and around with control. Spotting is another essential skill we break down in this class.
By keeping your head forward and focusing on a fixed point, you can prevent dizziness and maintain clear direction throughout your turn. We also provide specific feedback on hip and knee alignment, such as keeping the knee open and the hip back to ensure you are not collapsing into the rotation. At Broche Ballet, we believe that detailed, personalized corrections make all the difference in a dancer's journey.
Whether you are struggling with counterbalancing your weight or perfecting your preparation, this practice session offers the technical insights needed to progress. Join us as we refine your turning mechanics through repetition, expert guidance, and a focus on proper body positioning for a more confident dance practice.
