About This Video
Welcome to a dynamic, fast-paced beginner barre class designed by Broche Ballet to bridge the gap between basic fundamentals and more fluid, intermediate movements. In this session, we dive deep into the mechanics of leg height and power, focusing specifically on the interplay between the hamstrings and the movement of the leg. You will explore various exercises including plié, tendu, and fondu, all leading up to the powerful grand battement.
The core of this lesson is understanding the technical secret to higher legs: releasing tension in the hamstrings. Many dancers struggle with 'gripping' the back of the leg, which actually hinders the range of motion. We will practice letting go of that tension to allow the leg to swing freely into the air, while simultaneously engaging the muscles under the leg to pull it up into a sharp retiré or controlled développé.
Throughout the 44-minute practice, the instructor provides constant feedback on your 'frame'—ensuring your upper body remains stable and aligned even as the lower body performs complex tasks. By focusing on proper breathing and the juxtaposition of release and strength, you will find more freedom in your movement and a more secure sense of balance. Whether you are a dedicated beginner looking to pick up the tempo or a more experienced dancer revisiting the basics, this class offers essential insights into muscle engagement and alignment that will transform your grand battement technique.
