About This Video
Achieving beautiful lines and strong foundations in ballet begins from the ground up—literally. In this specialized class from Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the often-overlooked area of toe dexterity and pinky toe control. Whether you are a beginner preparing for your first pair of pointe shoes or an experienced dancer looking to refine your articulation, these exercises are designed to build the intrinsic muscle strength necessary for stability and grace.
Using a simple resistance band, you will learn how to isolate specific parts of the foot. We begin by focusing on pushing down into the band with the toes, holding the end point to engage the muscles, and slowly releasing tension to build control. This isometric focus is crucial for dancers who want to avoid 'crunching' their toes inside their shoes.
One of the unique highlights of this session is the pinky toe focus. To strengthen the lateral side and the inside of the foot, we practice pointing the toes while keeping the pinky toe extended outward. This helps in creating a wider, more stable base for relevé and ensures that the foot doesn't 'sickle' or lose its shape during complex movements.
The class also incorporates functional exercises such as rolling up the resistance band with the foot, scrunching the material, and even picking it up with the toes. These movements mimic the demands placed on the foot during pointe work and tendu exercises. We also explore the concept of toe spreading—moving the toes horizontally as well as vertically—to improve overall balance.
By the end of this 12-minute session, you will have a better understanding of how to mimic the band’s resistance with your own muscle engagement. These small but mighty movements are the key to unlocking better balance and more expressive footwork in your ballet practice.
