About This Video
Unlock greater range of motion and protect your lower body with this targeted 5-minute ballet calf and foot stretch routine from Broche Ballet. Designed for dancers of all levels, this 'Fast 5' session focuses on the critical areas that often hold dancers back: tight calves and stiff ankles. Improving your ankle dorsiflexion is essential for achieving a deep, functional demi-plié and providing the power needed for explosive sautés.
We begin the class in a parallel position to ensure the stretch is directed squarely through the center of the calf muscles. Starting with a simple demi-plié, we focus on keeping the heels firmly planted to create length. From there, we transition into a classic calf stretch with one leg back.
The key here is alignment; by pressing the hips forward and keeping the head back, you ensure the stretch reaches the deep soleus and gastrocnemius muscles. You will learn how small adjustments, such as picking up the toes or slightly bending the back knee, can shift the intensity and focus of the stretch to exactly where you need it most. In addition to calf work, this session prioritizes foot health.
We incorporate movements that involve stretching on demi-pointe and flipping over the top of the foot to release the metatarsals. These exercises are particularly beneficial for dancers preparing for pointe work or those who spend a lot of time in tightened shoes. By working through these stretches, you improve your foot articulation and the overall line of your leg.
Throughout the video, we encourage you to notice the differences between your left and right sides. Balancing the flexibility in both legs is vital for technical precision and injury prevention. Whether you are using a barre or a simple wall for balance, this routine is an efficient way to maintain your body.
