About This Video
Welcome to Broche Ballet. This specialized 10-minute class is designed for dancers looking to refine their footwork and improve their ability to get over the box while dancing en pointe. Flexibility in the ankle and strength in the arch are essential for any ballet dancer, but they become critical once you move from flat shoes to pointe shoes.
This session focuses on the subtle mechanics of the foot, specifically through parallel foot stretches and ankle isolation. We begin with a thorough warm-up designed to wake up the small muscles in the feet. Using movements like criss-crosses and gentle pliés, we prepare the shins and ankles for deeper work.
A major focus of this tutorial is learning how to isolate the ankle. Often, dancers rely on their body weight or momentum to push through a stretch, but true control comes from the ability to manipulate the foot independently. By isolating the ankle, you can better target the wing range and ensure you are pushing through the center of the box rather than sickling or rolling.
During the lesson, you will practice parallel foot stretches that emphasize keeping the front of the ankle open and the top of the shin relaxed. We also dive into the bevel stretch. By lifting one foot, turning it in, and then out while maintaining a bevel on the toe, you build the necessary strength to support your weight en pointe.
These exercises are practiced in first position and sous-sus to challenge your stability and alignment. Whether you are working on your roll to the box or trying to increase your ankle flexibility, these exercises provide the foundation for more confident and graceful pointe work. At Broche Ballet, we believe that understanding the mechanics behind every movement leads to a safer and more beautiful dance practice.
Practice these stretches daily to see significant improvements in your foot line and strength. Join us for this focused session and feel the difference in your next center work!
