About This Video
Welcome to the Artistry Barre at Broche Ballet, an immersive 39-minute class designed to help adult dancers move beyond mechanical execution and embrace the expressive soul of dance. In this session, we shift the focus from merely doing the steps to truly feeling the movement, emphasizing the essential elements of breath, musicality, and stage presence. The foundation of artistry begins with the breath.
Throughout the class, you will learn to use your breath to fuel your movements, especially during the challenging adagio portion of the barre. Proper breathing allows for greater fluidity and control, preventing the stiffness that can sometimes occur during sustained exercises. We integrate this with a focus on port de bras, teaching you how to use your arms to tell a story and convey emotion.
By keeping the arms relaxed and using positions like allongé, you can create a more expansive and captivating presence. A key concept explored in this lesson is the violin metaphor: treating the legs like the instrument and the arms like the bow. This mindset encourages a smooth, melodic quality in movements such as fondu and développé.
You will work on the precision of your leg technique while maintaining an artistic upper body. We also pay close attention to transitions, refining the execution of chassé and temps lié to ensure every shift of weight is graceful and controlled. From the initial plié to the final balance in arabesque or sus-sous, this class encourages you to take risks and go for it.
We believe that technique serves the art, and by practicing these sequences with a focus on the music and your own unique expression, you will build the strength and confidence needed for more advanced choreography. Join Broche Ballet for this special artistry day and discover the joy of expressive movement at the barre.
