About This Video
Stepping away from the barre and into the center is one of the most rewarding milestones for a beginner dancer. In this 24-minute class from Broche Ballet, we bridge the gap between supported exercises and independent movement. This Beginner Center Barre session is specifically designed to help you find your equilibrium, relying on internal muscle engagement rather than the physical support of the barre. By removing that external anchor, you will learn to engage your core and find your true vertical alignment.
The class begins with fundamental plié sequences in all positions, challenging you to find your center of gravity immediately. As we progress into tendu and dégagé combinations, we place a special emphasis on the upper arms. Maintaining active muscle tone in your port de bras creates a stable frame, which is essential for preventing wobbling as the legs move. You will also practice the pas de cheval, a movement that refines foot articulation and tests your stability while balancing on a single standing hip in the coup de pied position.
A significant focus of this lesson is hip stability during rond de jambe. We work on isolating the movement of the femur head within the hip socket, a technique that prevents pelvic twisting and ensures a square, level pelvis. This isolation is foundational for developing the functional strength required for more complex center work. We also explore the temps lié, teaching you how to shift weight smoothly through second and fourth positions while maintaining active turnout in both heels.
The session concludes with a graceful fondu adage combination, incorporating tombé pas de bourrée and développé. These movements help you apply technical corrections in a free-standing environment, building the confidence and strength needed to dance beautifully in the center. Whether you are a student transitioning from the barre for the first time or a dancer looking to refine your weight placement, this class offers essential tools for growth.
