About This Video
Welcome to the first week of our 'Bridging the Gap' series at Broche Ballet, a dedicated program designed to help you level up your center and waltz vocabulary. In this session, we focus on one of the most foundational yet challenging movements in ballet: the waltz turn. Moving from the stability of the barre to the freedom of the center requires a strong grasp of weight transfer, coordination, and spatial awareness. This class is specifically designed to give you the confidence to move across the floor with grace and precision.
The lesson begins with a focused warmup to prepare your muscles for the dynamic movements of the waltz. We then dive into a detailed breakdown of the waltz turn, stripping it back to its core elements. You will learn the specific six-count sequences that define this movement, focusing on the essential 'step and brush' technique. Our instructor carefully guides you through the footwork on both the right and left sides, ensuring you understand how to navigate the room's corners and maintain direction throughout your rotation.
A key component of this class is understanding the mechanics of the turn itself. We emphasize the importance of turning in the same direction as your step and using your arms as a guide to maintain your line. You'll practice three steps forward, a brush back, and a controlled rotation, followed by transition steps to reset for the next sequence. By breaking the turn into segments—where the first half focuses on the step and the second half introduces the rotation—you'll build a more solid technical foundation. To conclude the practice, we combine these elements into a fluid combination set to music, allowing you to find your rhythm and flow. Join us at Broche Ballet as we bridge the gap between basic steps and professional-level center work.
