About This Video
Welcome to the first installment of our Step by Step series at Broche Ballet, where we dive deep into one of the most essential movements in the ballet vocabulary: the balancé, or waltz step. This 21-minute practice is designed to demystify the mechanics of this fluid, rhythmic movement, ensuring you build a solid foundation before adding complexity or speed. We begin by breaking down the framework of the step. You will learn to initiate the movement with a controlled tombé (falling step), followed by the transition through demi-pointe and the essential coupé. By isolating these components, you can focus on the rainbow arc pathway of the body, which creates the signature lilt and grace associated with a beautiful waltz.
The instructor guides you through a progression that starts slowly, allowing you to find your balance and proper alignment. We emphasize the importance of a deep plié to provide power and cushion for each transition. As you gain comfort with the footwork, we introduce arm placement and head movement, helping you coordinate the upper and lower body for a more professional look. One of the biggest challenges with the balancé is timing. In this class, we specifically address how to quicken the tempo by preparing the second leg for the third step almost immediately after the initial fall. This proactive preparation is what allows a dancer to look effortless even at faster musical speeds.
Whether you are a beginner looking to learn the step for the first time or an intermediate dancer wanting to refine your technique, this class offers the detailed feedback and encouragement needed to succeed. Practice along with Broche Ballet and gain the confidence to link steps together with smoothness and control. By the end of this session, you’ll have a clear understanding of the waltz framework, ready for more complex variations in the next two classes of this series.
