About This Video
In this comprehensive 48-minute session from Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the technical nuances that separate a beginner from an intermediate dancer. Our focus is on the trifecta of stability: balance, posture, and precise leg work. This traditional barre progression starts with intentional pliés in various positions, allowing you to establish your center from the very first movement.
As we progress through tendus and dégagés, the tempo increases, challenging your rhythmic precision and footwork. A key highlight of this class is the emphasis on structural alignment. You will learn the 'breath between the shoulder blades' technique, which helps widen the back for a more expressive port de bras while keeping the rib cage engaged and closed.
This subtle shift in posture transforms your presence at the barre and improves your overall stability during complex transitions. Throughout the rond de jambe and cambré sections, you will apply these postural principles to maintain a long, supported spine even as the torso moves off-axis. The class also addresses the common challenge of weight shifting.
Whether moving into a sous-sous or transitioning from demi-pointe to flat, you will practice shifting your head and center of gravity accurately over the supporting leg. Our leg work segment includes demanding frappés on demi-pointe, where the focus remains on pulling the working knee back to maintain consistent turnout and avoiding any internal rotation during the strike. The session concludes with a graceful adage and powerful grand battements.
In the adage, we work on synchronizing the brush of the foot with a relevé to create a sense of lift and fluidity, almost as if preparing for a jump. We also cover spatial awareness, specifically mastering the fifth-fourth-fifth pattern in pas de bourrée to ensure you never feel crowded by the barre. Finally, the grand battements will test your core stability as we incorporate relevés to push your balance to the next level.
