About This Video
Finding peace in movement is a core tenet of the Broche Ballet philosophy. In this Moving Meditation session, we step away from the rigors of technical drills to focus on the expressive power of the upper body and arms. This class centers on creating a seamless flow between positions, transforming traditional ballet exercises into a restorative practice that calms the mind while training the body.
We begin by exploring the foundational port de bras, focusing on the transition from first to second position. By incorporating the allongé—an elongated movement that adds breath and reach to the arms—you will learn how to avoid stiffness and embrace a more natural, fluid aesthetic. The sequence is designed to be repetitive and rhythmic, allowing your mind to settle as your body moves.
A key component of this meditation is the integration of breath. We guide you through specific inhale and exhale cues that sync with your movements. Inhaling as the arms move through first position and exhaling as they open to second helps to release tension in the neck and shoulders, a common area of tightness for many adult dancers.
This mindful approach ensures that your movements appear effortless and rounded, rather than mechanical. As the sequence progresses, we introduce the arabesque line. Here, the focus remains on the upper body and the coordination of the arms.
You will practice maintaining one arm in a stable extension while the other flows through a series of graceful changes. This helps build the coordination required for more complex center work while keeping the spirit of the meditation intact. Whether you are looking to refine your artistry or simply need a moment of calm in your day, this short session provides the perfect escape.
By the end of this class, you will have a better understanding of how to use your breath to fuel your dancing, resulting in a more expressive and relaxed performance.
