About This Video
Starting your journey en pointe is a monumental milestone for any ballet dancer. In this first session of the Summer 2021 Cohort at Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the essential foundations of pointe shoe maintenance and initial technique. If you have ever struggled with ribbons that won't stay tight or the frustrating "disappearing heel" phenomenon, this class is designed specifically for you.
We begin with the technical aspects of shoe preparation. Properly tying your ribbons is not just about aesthetics; it is vital for safety and support. You will learn how to adjust the ribbon angle based on your unique ankle shape and how your foot transitions from flat to relevé.
Our instructor shares professional secrets, like using safety pins to experiment with ribbon placement before ever picking up a needle and thread. We also address common fit issues, such as sewing a small dart to prevent the heel of the shoe from slipping off while dancing. Comfort is key when transitioning to pointe work.
We discuss how to manage pressure on the big toe using gel caps or toe pads. You will learn the "snip" trick—shortening your toe caps to ensure they do not impede circulation at the joint. Once the shoes are secure, we move into the studio for initial exercises.
This class covers the mechanics of using your toes inside the box, practicing rolling up through the shoe, and finding stability in a first position relevé. The session concludes with an extensive Q&A, addressing real-time concerns from dancers just like you. Whether you are troubleshooting shoe saturation or looking for the perfect ribbon tension, this Broche Ballet class provides the comprehensive guidance needed to feel confident and secure in your first pair of pointe shoes.
