About This Video
Foot strength is the foundation of every great dancer, and at Broche Ballet, we believe that preparation for en pointe work begins with the smallest muscles of the feet. In this 14-minute seated pre-pointe session, instructor Tara leads you through a series of specialized exercises designed to unlock the full potential of your toe dexterity and control. Unlike traditional barre work that focuses on the whole leg, this class zooms in on the intricate movements of the toes, which are vital for stability, articulation, and injury prevention.
The class begins with guided toe spreads, using manual assistance to create space between the toes and widen the base of the foot. This is followed by isolation drills, specifically targeting the pinky toe. You will learn how to tap the pinky toe independently—a movement that challenges the neural pathways and strengthens the lateral arch of the foot. These exercises are essential for maintaining proper alignment in relevé and preventing the foot from rolling.
A core component of the workout is the 'piano toes' sequence. Here, Tara demonstrates how to lift all five toes and articulate them individually, similar to playing a scale on a piano. This level of control ensures that you are engaging all ten toes, not just the big toe, which is a common pitfall for many students. You will also practice reversing these sequences, lifting from the big toe down to the pinky to further challenge your coordination.
By focusing on these micro-movements while seated, you can dedicate 100% of your attention to foot mechanics without the added complexity of balancing on one leg. This class is an excellent addition to your daily practice, whether you are a beginner preparing for your first pair of pointe shoes or an experienced dancer looking to refine your foot articulation and strengthen your foundation.
