About This Video
Developing strong, articulate feet is essential for every dancer, whether you are just starting your journey or preparing for pointe work. In this specialized 15-minute session from Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the often-overlooked mechanics of the toes. This seated pre-pointe class focuses on toe communication—the ability to isolate and control each toe to build a more stable and powerful foundation for your dancing.
The class begins with exercises designed to improve toe spread and dexterity. You will learn how to push down into the floor with long, straight toes rather than curling them. Curling the toes is a common habit that can lead to tension and instability; instead, we focus on lengthening the muscles to create a strong, flat connection with the floor.
The instructor guides you through noticing the different sensations in your arches, calves, and even the subtle muscles in your feet. A highlight of this practice is the focus on individual toe awareness. Many dancers find that their second toe is particularly difficult to control.
Through targeted exercises, you will learn to strengthen this communication, ensuring that every part of your foot is contributing to your balance and power. We even use imaginative techniques to let your stronger toes support the weaker ones, building a more cohesive foot structure. After the strengthening work, the session transitions into a series of essential foot and arch stretches.
You will work on your demi-pointe flexibility, ensuring your big toe remains straight and aligned to prevent injury. We explore the taco pancake metaphor to visualize the changing shape and pressure of the foot as it moves. Whether you are aiming to dance en pointe or simply want to improve your relevé and balance, these exercises provide the necessary under-the-hood work to keep your feet healthy and responsive.
