About This Video
Achieving a beautiful, strong line in ballet begins from the ground up. In this 16-minute seated pre-pointe class from Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the mechanics of the foot to help you develop the strength and flexibility required for advanced technique and eventual pointe work. Whether you are a beginner looking to understand your anatomy or an intermediate dancer seeking to refine your line, these exercises provide the essential conditioning your feet need.
Our focus today is on the intrinsic muscles—the small but mighty muscles within the foot that allow for precise control and articulation. The session begins with detailed toe stretches, where you will learn to isolate and stretch each toe individually. By feeling the stretch travel from the top of the foot through the shin, you create the space necessary for a deeper, more aesthetic pointe.
We pay special attention to the big toe and pinky toe, learning to hold the big toe down while reaching the pinky toe out to create a wide, stable base. Proper alignment is crucial for injury prevention and technical mastery. We will explore how to avoid a 'sickle' or an over-exaggerated 'wing' by focusing on correct ankle alignment and the engagement of the Achilles and shins.
This seated practice allows you to memorize the physical sensations of correct placement without the added challenge of balancing on one leg at the barre. The ultimate goal of this conditioning is to carry these sensations into your active standing work. You will learn how to apply this new-found foot awareness to movements such as fondu, rond de jambe, and grand rond de jambe.
By establishing a strong foundation in your feet and mastering your demi-pointe, you ensure that every movement is executed with power and grace. Join us at Broche Ballet as we work toward a stronger, more articulated pointe through consistent, mindful practice.
