About This Video
Welcome to a unique session with Broche Ballet, filmed on location during a cruise ship journey! This 40-minute beginner ballet barre class is designed to help you ground your technique, even when you are traveling or in a non-traditional space. This practice focuses heavily on the foundational movements that define a dancer’s strength: the plié and the grand battement.
In this class, we delve deep into the mechanics of the plié. While it may seem like a simple bend of the knees, the plié is a vital opportunity to check and adjust your turnout. We emphasize the importance of even turnout in both legs, preventing the common mistake of one leg rolling forward or back, which can negatively affect your balance.
By focusing on alignment during every plié, you build the structural stability needed for more complex movements later in the center. As we transition into grand battement, the instructor provides specific feedback on maintaining that hard-earned turnout. It is easy for the sheer force of a large leg throw to pull the standing leg out of alignment.
You will learn how to engage your core and keep your standing knee tracking directly over your toes, ensuring that your standing leg remains as turned out as your working leg. We also introduce the double grand battement, a variation that challenges your coordination and stability. The session also explores developed movements like the développé and the classic lines of an arabesque.
We discuss how arm placement—specifically high positions over the head—can actually assist in maintaining even turnout and core stability by lengthening the spine. We also touch upon the concept of friction against the floor to create sharp, clean movements. Whether you are practicing in our Miami studio or from your own home, these technical nuances will elevate your practice.
