About This Video
Achieve a more functional and beautiful rotation with our Week 3 Turnout Stretch and Strength session at Broche Ballet. Turnout is a hallmark of ballet technique, but achieving it safely requires a delicate balance between active muscular engagement and passive flexibility. In this video, we move beyond just 'holding' a position and instead focus on the mechanics of how to build and sustain your rotation from the hips.
The class begins with a series of exercises designed to activate the deep rotators and the core. We start at the barre to work through demi plié and grand plié. Here, the instructor emphasizes the importance of using the plié as a reference point to find your maximum turnout.
You will also practice tendu to the devant position and attitude front, learning how to maintain your rotation even as the working leg moves away from the supporting side. Flexibility is just as vital as strength. This session includes specific stretches for the quads, calves, and hip flexors.
We recommend having a belt or bathrobe tie handy to assist with these stretches, and a pillow for comfort during kneeling movements. By lengthening the muscles that often resist turnout, you create the space necessary for your bones to rotate freely within the hip socket. A central theme of this Week 3 practice is the role of the core.
Our instructor provides cues for engaging the stomach muscles to stabilize the pelvis, which is essential for preventing 'rolling' or forcing turnout from the knees. Throughout the class, we maintain a focus on overall alignment and graceful cambré, ensuring that your turnout work enhances your total artistry. Whether you are preparing for pointe work or simply want to feel more secure in your center practice, this class offers the professional guidance you need to succeed.
