About This Video
Starting your journey en pointe is a significant milestone for any dancer. In Class #5 of the 2025 Cohort, Broche Ballet dives deep into the mechanics of the sus-sous and the fundamental first position relevé. This 43-minute session is designed to help you build the necessary strength, muscle memory, and alignment to move with confidence and precision.
The class begins with a focus on the fundamental relevé in first position. We explore how to maintain proper alignment by engaging the turnout from the hips and keeping the weight centered over the big toe to prevent sickling. You will learn how to avoid common pitfalls at the barre, such as leaning too heavily or falling off the box of the shoe.
A core component of this practice is the sus-sous movement. We break down the scooping action required to bring the feet together quickly and efficiently into a tight fifth position. Precision is key; you will practice lifting both heels at the exact same time to ensure a stable and aesthetically pleasing line.
The class also introduces precise jumping movements en pointe, teaching you how to use your demi-plié to cushion landings and find power in the rise. Beyond technical execution, we prioritize dancer health. You will be guided through essential calf stretches and parallel position exercises to alleviate tension in the shins and lower legs.
This balanced approach ensures that you are building strength sustainably. By focusing on the engagement of the inner thighs and the placement of the elbows at the barre, you will develop the upper-body stability required for more advanced work. Whether you are transitioning from sus-sous to parallel or perfecting your tendu, this class provides the technical scaffolding needed to excel in your pointe work.
