About This Video
Transitioning to en pointe work is a significant milestone for any adult dancer, but moving from those initial basics to intermediate confidence requires intentional practice. In this 20-minute Just Barre session at Broche Ballet, we dive deep into the mechanics of pointe work to help you find stability and grace. This class is specifically designed to bridge the gap between early beginner exercises and more fluid, intermediate combinations by focusing on the core fundamentals that support your weight.
We begin by focusing on essential barre work, utilizing exercises like fondu and plié to build the necessary strength in the ankles and metatarsals. One of the primary focuses of this session is the piqué. We break down the piqué transition, emphasizing the importance of a clean weight transfer and a sharp relevé.
You will learn why starting from a lower position instead of a higher one can actually boost your confidence and alignment when executing piqué movements. We even explore a specific count-based drill—using a rhythmic plié approach—to prepare you for the coordination required in piqué turns. Throughout the class, we emphasize the flex and point action of the ankle.
Proper ankle articulation is non-negotiable for safe and effective pointe work. By refining your sous-sus and passé positions, you will develop the control needed to eventually move away from the barre. We discuss how using the barre for support is a personal choice based on your current level, but highlight how it can be a vital tool for finding your center before attempting center work.
At Broche Ballet, we believe that technique is the key to artistic freedom. By committing to each foot and mastering the timing of your plié and relevé, you will gain the poise needed for more complex choreography. This practice session is packed with exercises that you can return to daily to sharpen your skills and feel more at home in your pointe shoes.
