About This Video
Building a strong foundation in ballet begins from the ground up, starting with the ankles and feet. This 10-minute standing pre-pointe class at Broche Ballet is specifically designed to target the intricate muscles of the ankle, ensuring you have the stability and strength required for both flat work and the eventual transition to dancing en pointe. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your technique, these exercises focus on the essential mechanics of foot articulation and alignment.
The session begins with foundational movements in parallel, including demi-plié and stretches, which help engage the ankle muscles and prepare them for more targeted work. A key focus of this class is the lateral wing motion—a critical skill for achieving the desired aesthetic and safety in ballet. You will learn how to move the ankle side-to-side without rotating the knee or allowing the arch to collapse.
By focusing on sliding the heel as if across a shelf while keeping the big toe firmly grounded, you will develop the control necessary to avoid sickling. As the class progresses, we move into first position, where the emphasis shifts to maintaining proper placement during a relevé. The instructor provides detailed cues on pressing the ankles forward toward the big toe and engaging the core and hips to support the lower body.
You will also practice tendu on demi-pointe, learning how to keep the ankles forward and engaged rather than letting them drop back. Consistent practice of these exercises will not only improve your balance but also enhance the overall line of your leg. By the end of this session, you will have a better understanding of how to spread your toes for maximum floor grip and how to align your pinky toe for a stable, professional look.
