About This Video
Moving from the barre to the center is one of the most exciting yet challenging transitions in ballet, especially when dancing en pointe. This Broche Ballet practice session, 'Venturing Off the Barre,' is designed to help you build the strength, precision, and confidence needed to execute center movements with grace. By focusing on high-repetition drills, you will develop the muscle memory required for stability when the support of the horizontal barre is removed.
The class begins with essential center preparations, refining turnout and alignment through tendu and fondu exercises. These movements are the foundation for more complex work; by mastering the 'melting' quality of the fondu, you ensure a soft landing and a powerful push-off for subsequent steps. We specifically focus on the transition from a deep plié to a sharp piqué sous-sus, emphasizing the importance of pushing through the demi-pointe to find your vertical axis quickly.
A significant portion of this session is dedicated to échappé drills. High-repetition échappé practice allows you to explore the 'escape' of the feet while maintaining a strong, centered core. You will learn to use small pliés to find balance and control between positions.
Additionally, we incorporate Asha Pace drills—focused exercises designed to enhance power and speed in your footwork. As we progress, we work through cou-de-pied exercises to practice shifting weight seamlessly between legs. This is followed by a tombé and bourrée combination, which integrates traveling steps with the foundational stability you have practiced.
Throughout the lesson, our instructors emphasize the 'play' aspect of ballet—encouraging you to test your limits and find your center in a supportive, professional environment. Whether you are preparing for a performance or simply looking to strengthen your pointe technique, this class provides the tools to take your dancing to the next level.
