About This Video
Welcome to the third session of the Broche Ballet Summer 2021 Beginner Pointe Cohort. This lesson is a critical step in building the foundational strength required for confident pointe work. While many students are eager to rise immediately, this class emphasizes the importance of the 'long toes' technique while balancing on flat. By learning to reach your toes deep into the shoe rather than curling them, you create a stable base that allows for better alignment and control once you eventually move to the box.
We begin with exercises focused on balancing on flat feet. This practice is essential for strengthening the tibialis posterior and the intrinsic muscles of the foot, which are responsible for stabilizing the ankle. You will learn how to engage your core and maintain proper vertical alignment, ensuring your weight is distributed correctly before attempting a relevé. The instructor provides detailed guidance on how to firm up the muscles of the foot and ankle to prevent wobbling, a common challenge for those new to pointe shoes.
Following the balance work, we introduce the mechanics of the sous-sus. This movement requires pulling the feet together into a tight fifth position en pointe. You will discover how lengthening the toes straight down provides the stability needed to take weight on one or both feet securely. We also touch upon positions like cou-de-pied and the importance of a controlled plié to transition smoothly between movements. Throughout the lesson, the instructor offers corrections on shoe alignment and posture, helping you develop the muscle memory needed for safe and graceful progression. Join us at Broche Ballet to refine your technique and build the strength necessary for a lifetime of beautiful pointe work.
