About This Video
Welcome to Week 3 of the Broche Ballet Beginner Pointe Cohort. This class marks an important milestone in your pointe journey as we introduce the sous-sus. Building upon the foundations of stability and alignment established in the first two weeks, we now begin to work on the precision required to draw the feet together from an open position into a tight fifth position en pointe. At Broche Ballet, we believe in a methodical approach to pointe work, ensuring that adult dancers develop the necessary strength and muscle memory to dance safely and beautifully.
The sous-sus is a fundamental movement in pointe work, acting as a gateway to more advanced combinations and center work. In this session, our instructor guides you through the technical nuances of the movement, emphasizing the "spring" into position and the essential "sucking up" feeling in the core and inner thighs. We focus heavily on maintaining proper turnout from the hips to ensure that the heels are driven forward, preventing any rolling or sickling on the box of the shoe. Precision in the sous-sus is the key to finding your center of balance while on your toes.
Beyond the sous-sus, this class delves into the pas de cheval, a graceful movement that develops foot articulation and speed. You will learn how to execute this "step of the horse" with control, focusing on the delicate brush of the toe and the sharp retiré before extending the leg. Throughout these exercises, we maintain a strong focus on the demi-plié. Learning to land softly and transition through a deep plié is crucial for protecting your joints and preparing for the power needed for subsequent rises.
We also address common challenges, such as maintaining a "wing" shape in the foot without sacrificing stability and ensuring the ankles remain strong yet flexible. The class concludes with a dedicated cool-down segment specifically designed for the unique demands of pointe work. These gentle stretches and ankle releases are vital for recovery and long-term foot health. Whether you are practicing at the barre at home or in a studio, this 30-minute session provides the technical breakdown necessary for a safe and successful transition to dancing en pointe.
