About This Video
Welcome to Week 3 of the Broche Ballet Beginner Pointe Cohort. This session is specifically designed to deepen your understanding of fundamental pointe mechanics, focusing on the sous-sus and the critical role of ankle stability. As you progress through your 16-week journey, mastering these basics ensures a safe and graceful transition to more complex movements in the future.
In this class, we place a heavy emphasis on proper ankle alignment. Many beginners struggle with 'sickling' or 'reeling' on pointe; here, you will learn how to actively push through the ankle to take the body's weight securely. The instructor provides detailed cues on keeping the leg stretched and long, particularly when transitioning onto one leg for movements like coupé.
By focusing on a strong, fully engaged foot rather than a 'floppy' one, you build the muscular endurance required for sustained pointe work and injury prevention. We will practice several key movements at the barre, including the sous-sus, coupé, and pas de cheval. You will learn the mechanics of moving from a bent leg in demi-plié to a fully stretched leg en pointe, a transition that creates the iconic 'stretch' of ballet.
The lesson also covers the intricate technique of rolling down through the feet from the platform and catching yourself on your demi-pointe, which is a vital skill for developing control, balance, and foot strength. Finally, we address the physical demands of pointe work with dedicated recovery time. You will be guided through specific ankle stretches and exercises designed to alleviate tension in the Achilles tendon and improve overall foot flexibility.
At Broche Ballet, we believe that longevity in dance comes from a balance of rigorous technique and mindful recovery. Whether you are practicing at home or in a studio, these stability drills will help you feel more secure and confident in your pointe shoes. Join us as we continue to build your strength from the ground up, ensuring every step is executed with precision and care.
