About This Video
Welcome to the inaugural session of the Winter 2024 Beginner Pointe Cohort at Broche Ballet. Transitioning to dancing en pointe is a significant milestone in a dancer's journey, but it requires a meticulous focus on technical foundations to ensure both safety and progress. This 47-minute comprehensive class is designed to bridge the gap between flat-shoe technique and the unique demands of pointe work, starting with the most fundamental element: the shoes themselves.
We begin the lesson by covering the essential ritual of putting on and tying your pointe shoes. You will learn the correct way to wrap and secure your ribbons to provide optimal ankle support without hindering your range of motion. We also discuss initial shoe care and how to assess the fit of your padding to avoid common comfort issues. Understanding how your equipment should feel is the first step toward a confident practice.
Central to this class is the concept of correct toe usage and ankle alignment. Beginners often face challenges such as "knuckling" or sickling when first rising. To combat this, we practice controlled exercises including tendu and plié, focusing on maintaining proper turnout from the hips while ensuring the working foot remains correctly aligned in first position. We emphasize keeping the supporting leg turned out and stable to create a strong base for all en pointe movements.
Safe stretching is also a key focus of this session. You will learn specific ballet foot stretches to improve arch flexibility, including how to use a counter for support. We teach you how to stretch the shins and the tops of the feet effectively while being careful not to overstretch or put unnecessary pressure on the Achilles tendon. By utilizing parallel placement for certain leg stretches, we ensure you are targeting the correct muscles for stability and strength. Join Broche Ballet for this foundational class and start your pointe journey with technical precision.
