Do I need a barre to start ballet at home?
No. A sturdy chair or countertop is enough for beginner barre work. A wall-mounted barre is optional later. You need a stable surface at about hip height and enough floor space to extend both arms.
You do not need a professional ballet barre to start adult ballet at home.
What to use on day one
A dining chair, kitchen counter, or windowsill works if it does not slide. The surface should sit near hip height when you stand in a soft plié. Hold it lightly. The barre is a reference, not a crutch that takes your weight.
Space and floor
You need room to stand with both arms open. A smooth floor plus socks or canvas slippers is enough for the first weeks. Carpet makes turning harder. Bare tile can be slick. If a class asks for center work and you only have a hallway, stay at the chair until you have space.
When a real barre helps
A portable or wall barre can feel more stable once you practice most days. It is not a prerequisite for the Sticky Buns beginner program or for the beginner start-here path.
What this does not mean
A furniture stand-in does not make every exercise safe at full range. Keep plié depth and turnout inside what you can control. If a class needs a longer center combination, skip or shorten it until you have the space.
