About This Video
Graceful and fluid arm movements are the hallmark of a polished dancer, yet the technical nuances of the upper body are often overlooked. In this 16-minute practice session with Broche Ballet, we focus specifically on refining your port de bras in the center, with a deep dive into the mechanics of the arabesque position. The class is designed to move beyond basic placement and into the fine-tuning that creates a professional, soft aesthetic.
One of the primary focuses of this tutorial is the rotation of the elbow. Many dancers struggle with a drooping elbow or a 'broken' line in their arabesque; here, you will learn how to keep the 'pointy part' of the elbow lifted and supported while stretching through the arm. By rotating the palms and managing the alignment from the shoulder to the fingertips, you will develop the strength and awareness needed to maintain a beautiful line even during complex center work.
Throughout the session, we utilize specific drills to improve shoulder flexibility and wrist articulation. These exercises include bending the elbows to face the floor and flipping the palms toward the ceiling to deconstruct the movement before reassembling it into a seamless flow. We also incorporate 'shenanigans'—playful movement exercises designed to loosen up the shoulders and prevent the stiffness that often plagues dancers during port de bras. Whether you are working on your first position or a full arabesque extension, these drills will provide the feedback and encouragement necessary to elevate your artistry. By the end of this class, you will have a better understanding of how to round, stretch, and open the arms with precision and grace.
